`Hastings 25th November: Wind SSE, blowing hard. A quantity of wreck was seen floating off the port this morning and the papers of the INDUS, Koch, from Liverpool to Bremen, were picked up together with the sails, yard, pump, 1 cask of oil etc. It is supposed that she struck on the Newcombe Sand last night and that the crew are drowned.' NB: References to the "Newcom[b]e Sand" off Dungeness occur in the 1820s and clearly do not refer to the sand of this name off Lowestoft. To the south and west of Dungeness lies coastal marshland: the nearest sands lie to the north and east, stretching towards Lydd, and these are presumed to be the "Newcom[b]e Sand". The reference quoted in source (2) [not checked], "Records of Events at Lydd c1817 - 1874" would appear to support this identification, rather than Camber Sands.
