Full Description
'Feb. 6. Langley. The like to Stephen de Pencestre and Henry le Waleys, on complaint by John de Seignaus that, being in a vessel laden with merchandise of Spanish merchants bound for Spain, he was wrecked at Dengemareys, co. Kent, and having brought some chests and other goods to land within the fee of the abbot of Battle, the men of Kent broke the boat and chests, carried them away with other goods, and still detain them.' 'Feb. 26, Westminster. The like [commission of oyer and terminer] to Stephen de Pencestre and Henry le Waleys, touching the persons of the county of Kent who had killed Vincent Estefne, partner and merchant of John de Seignaus, who had escaped alive from a vessel wrecked at Dengemareys [Dunge Marsh, Kent] within the fee of the Abbot of Battle, and touching the persons who carried away the goods of the said Vincent and others in the ship which were washed ashore on the sea-coast at Romenal [Romney, Kent].' Source (2) interprets the location of Dengemareys as near Battle, although the modern English edition of (1) gives the modern name of the place of loss.
Source (3) is based on source (1) above, and therefore states the reporting date as 26-FEB-1286; however, source (4) puts the reporting date back to 06-FEB-1286.
