Full Description
A possible Second World War air raid shelter was identified during an evaluation at The Drove, Fordwich in 2006. The feature comprised a "large steep sided pit which had a depth in excess of 1.40 m. and diameter in excess of 1.00 m… This pit was only partially exposed and continued beyond the northern limit of the trench. Its exposed extent consisted of a water-filled void possibly lined with or containing, large corrugated steel sheeting and partially backfilled with a loose friable garden soil deposit which contained mortar, ash, coal and other modern material" (from the original report, 1). This feature has been interpreted as elements of a possible Second World War air raid shelter. (1)
