Full Description

The east pier of Ramsgate Harbour was constructed in 1750, partly encompassing an earlier pier. Slipway No. 1, built as a Morten’s Patent slipway, was constructed in 1838 immediately adjacent to the western side of the east pier. Conceived as an alternative to a dry dock, the patent slipway used a winch to pull boats out of the water so they could be worked on at the upper end of the ramp which stands above the waterline. <1>
