Findspot record TR 23 NE 243 - Neolithic and other later prehistoric flints from Long Hill, Dover

Summary

A fieldwalking programme carried out in 2015 and 2016 found an extensive collection of later prehistoric flints. Site 1 produced over 90 struck flints, of which 93% were flint tools; with either miscellaneous retouches or secondary working and worked tools such as scrapers and broken blades. Site 2 produced a similar assemblage but also a bashed lump or large ‘proto core’, hammer stones, worked flakes, snapped blades, scrapers, a burin and many more calcined flints. In a discreet area of 10m x 10m immediately west of the bunker were a handful of small sherds of worn grog tempered pottery whose date is still to be confirmed but believed to be Iron Age ware. Both sites are believed to be of primarily late bronze age date although several flints of mesolithic and particularly neolithic date were found. Site 1 appears to have been a flint tool manufacturing site
