Full Description
The Old Convent Farmhouse and Rosemary’ (Grade II Listed; List Entry No. 1222933) which stands to the immediately east of the site. This was originally part of a probable eighteenth or nineteenth century farmstead which appears to have occupied part of the south-east end of the site. Within this general locality, the Ordnance Surveyors drawing of c.1797 shows a complex of buildings, both residential and non-domestic in function. This building was later used as a Victorian school, whose buildings extended into the site. The school buildings include what was the former farmhouse and its attached agricultural range, which stands within the site. The historic OS maps shows how the school expanded with addition buildings present on the 1896 revision of the first ed. OS and by the 1905 revision, a large building had been added to the north-west side of the complex. By the time of the 1931–2 revision, the west wing of the school building had been extended to the north. The remains of some of these buildings were seen during an archaeological evaluation of the site carried out in 2023 ahead of the redevelopment of the site for housing, in Trenches 9 and 13. In Trench 9, a wall was recorded in section and may represent the remains of an outbuilding built between 1871 and 1896. The remains of the west wing of the school building were found in Trench 13, including the north-east end wall from the original building (believed to be the former agricultural range built by c.1797) and the north-east end wall of the extension which was added sometime between 1905 and 1932.
The walling from trench 9 was seen in the south west facing section, it comprised three courses of yellow bricks, with each brick measuring 0.11m x 0.07mx 0.22m. In trench 13 three walls were seen, the first ran through the centre of the trench was of flint and chalk construction with the occasional
red brick. The second ran part way through the north-east end of Trench 13. It was built of flint, red brick and frogged yellow brick on a concrete foundation. The third ran part way through the south-west end of Trench 13 and survived as a single course of yellow brickwork. (information summarised from source) (1)
