Full Description

Three brick-lined wells and an infilled brick-lined cess tank dating to between the mid-eighteenth and mid nineteenth centuries were located during limited depth ground recuction excavation works. A small gully full of discarded animal bone and horn cores was also found, located partially within the footprint of a building located to the rear of the former pub on the early editions of Ordnance Survey mapping, which may have been a stable block or coach house. A late 18th or 19th century well or cess pit was identified during an evaluation at the site in 2017. The feature was at least 0.8m in depth and was constructed of orange-red bricks set in a light grey sandy mortar and capped by a large slab of Yorkstone. (2)
