Maritime record TR 01 NE 260 - Location of the Denge Tudor wreck, now removed.
Summary
The remains of a 16th century wooden vessel were discovered at CEMEX’s Denge Quarry whilst dredging in April 2022. The wreck timbers were buried beneath beach shingle. The wreck is considered to be of high archaeological significance because of the date of the vessel and its method of construction. Work funded by Historic England and undertaken by Wessex Archaeology has included an initial survey in May 2022, further recording and assessment of the timbers at Denge Quarry in July and August 2022 and post-excavation assessment in accordance with an Updated Project Design during 2023 and 2024. The post excavation process has included further dendrochronological work, assessment of environmental samples and caulking, as well as further research to better understand the shipwreck remains and the wider environment of Dungeness headland. The final post-excavation report, including an agreed publication process, is due for completion in 2024.
