Full Description
Kent Coast Railway extended their Herne Bay line to Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate in October 1863. Building the Margate Station to the same architectural plans as that of Their Herne Bay Station.
By 1862 the London, Chatham & Dover Railway (LC&DR) was working the Kent costal Railway line and had absorbed the smaller company by 1871. LC&DR renamed Margate station, Margate West.
In 1923 Southern Railways (SR) consolidated the two railways (SER & LC&DR) serving Margate, and closed Margate Sands station in 1926. In the same year Margate West Station was replaced with a modern station designed by Railway station, thought to have been Edwin Maxwell Fry. <1>
On completion the station was renamed ‘Margate’ and was Gade II listed (HE #1260321) in 1987.<2>
