Full Description

During a watching brief carried out at 52 Salisbury Road, St Margaret's at Cliffe in 2017 a length of curved ditch was found that was cut by an Anglo-Saxon burial. The ditch is interpreted as a probable ring-ditch. The ditch appeared to be following a curving north-south route across the site. It was c. 2.35m wide and c. 1.50m deep with sloping sides and a flat base. No artefacts were recovered but based on parallels the ditch was interpreted as a prehistoric round barrow (TR 34 SE 440). The barrow was cut by a lter, deliberate inhumation burial. Although no grave goods were found the burial is suggested as being of Anglo-Saxon date. The placing of Anglo-Saxon burials alongside prehistoric ring-ditches is a well-known local practice. (1)
