Two late Iron Age - early Roman cremation burials were identified during a watching brief carried out in 2011 on land at St Nicholas Court Farm, St Nicholas at Wade. One burial dated to between c.25 BC - 75 AD and one dated from c.75 - 100 AD.

Cremation 1 comprised one fragment of cremated bone and 134 sherds of Late Iron Age - early Roman pottery. 131 originated from a ‘Belgic’-style grog-tempered ware possible cordoned jar, dating to c.25 BC/50-75 AD emphasis. The vessel has been interpreted as a possible Thompson 1980 Type B3-1.

Cremation 2 comprised 100 sherds of Late Iron Age pottery. 20 sherds originated from another ‘Belgic’-style grog-tempered ware in the form of a small bowl/cup form, dating to c.25 AD/50-75 AD.
80 sherds originated from a fine buff sandy ware butt-beaker dating from c.50/75-125 AD. The vessel has been interpreted as a probable Rigby 1995 Fabric IV.

The cremation burials had been heavily disturbed, with one cremation pot identified from the soil heap. Some charred fragments of bone survived.

If the burials were related, a time frame of around c.60-80 AD is proposed for their deposition at the site. (1)
