Full Description
Former site of the The Lodge 18th century building, Canterbury Road, Westgate-on-Sea. Historic Building Recording was carried out at the site in 2017 prior to its demolition. The 18th century building was originally located at the entrance Dent-de-Lion House and Farm. Dent-de-Lion House has since been demolished, and the area around it converted into a residential housing estate.
The report concluded that "refurbishment in the second half of the twentieth century rendered the structure barely distinguishable from the modern bungalows that populate the area. Few features of interest or significance remain within the building, its original fixtures and fittings all now lost, its original structure only occasionally visible. The general form of the building does, however, remain and from this it proved possible to deduce something of its original arrangement. This appears to have been straightforward, comprising four main rooms on either side of a central passage. From what can be determined, the Lodge appears to have been an unremarkable building, its appearance and arrangement similar to other lodges of this period….Arguably the best preserved remnant of the eighteenth-century Dent-de-Lion House is not the Lodge but the north boundary wall, and the cast-iron gates that pass through it" (from the original report, 1).
