Full Description
Neolithic-Bronze Age pottery and struck flint, alongside a single fragment of medieval pottery, was excavated on land south of Safari House, Ramsgate during an evaluation in 2016. (Location accurate to the nearest 40m based on available information).
13 sherds (c.74g) of prehistoric pottery were recovered from the site. An Iron Age plain flint-tempered wall sherd, four Bronze Age sherds originating from a vessel formed of flint tempered fabric, and five Neolithic Grooved Ware sherds (including a ?rim sherd) with incised linear decoration were identified at the site. The other sherds identified at the site were dated between the Neolithic and Bronze Age period and included a single sherd of black grogged ware with an internally bevelled rim, and two further fragments, one of which demonstrated impressed external decoration. Six (69g) prehistoric struck flint flakes were identified at the site. "A number of the flints are unpatinated but two from Trench 6 have mottled blue patination. A thin
chalky white cortex remaining on four indicates that these were made from locally collected flint, whilst a small flake from Trench 6 has the distinct abraded surface of a beach pebble. There are only two worked pieces and no cores. A small flake from Trench 2 has traces of retouch along one edge but it is not a recognisable tool. Another flake from Trench 3 has a small worked notch on one side. The 81mm long blade from Trench 6 shows no evidence of working and terminates in a hinge-fracture.
In the absence of any especially diagnostic pieces, this small flint assemblage could fit into a broadly Neolithic to Bronze Age date-range and as such might be contemporary with some of the pottery recovered (see above). The long blade, however, could be earlier" (from the original report, 1).
