Full Description

Elements of a post-medieval building were excavated at 34-36 St Peter's Road, Broadstairs during an evaluation undertaken in 2017. Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information.

Remains associated with the building include a wall and foundation alongside a series of levelling deposits thought to represent layers deposited prior to the creation of a chalk floor. The wall was constructed of flint, chalk and lime mortar and was situated in an L-shaped trench. In one area of the wall a later alteration - possibly a rebuild - had taken place, with bricks built into the corner of the structure. Two levelling layers were associated with the wall, and a probable chalk floor was located above these, comprising a layer of compacted chalk of 0.07m thickness. Finds associated with the levelling layers comprised a probable 18th century glass bottle top and fragments of brick.

The building has been dated to the 18th century through artefactual evidence recovered from it. It is likely to have been demolished prior to the mid 19th century, as it is not visible on the Heritage Tithe Map 1839 or any following OS maps. It is likely that the majority of the building remains are located beneath a neighbouring property. (1)
