Full Description
Elements of a Second World War air raid shelter were identified on land at 34-36 St Peter's, Broadstairs during an evaluation in 2017. Location accurate to the nearest 1m based on available information.
The description of the air raid shelter is as follows: "the shelter was constructed in a large L-shaped, straight-sided cut measuring 10.65m long by a maximum 4.90m wide. The structure was built from concrete slabs of c 0.26m thickness which had been cast in situ following excavation of the hole in which the shelter was constructed. Cast marks visible on the interior of the structure indicated a timber superstructure had been built within the construction cut, with concrete poured behind this to form the walls of the shelter. The roof of the structure was probably pre-fabricated and was originally curved but had been caved in following disuse. Given surrounding ground levels the shelter would have been of semi-sunken form, probably with earth banking over the top.
The entrance was approximately 1.36m wide by 4.86m long (internal dimensions 0.91m by 4.63m). The shelter was accessed via set of steps of which six survived. The upper part of the entrance had been heavily disturbed at some point, with several steps removed. At the base of the steps was an area approximately 2.17m long by 0.91m wide that formed a small ante-room with a drain positioned in the south-west corner. A 0.97m wide doorway positioned in the south-east wall led into the main body of the shelter.
In area, the main part of the shelter measured 9.71m long by 2.64m wide (internal dimensions 9.26m by 2.16m). Apart from the cast marks, no obvious internal features were recorded, though two lines of brick scarring were recorded at the south-east end. These lay 0.66m from the north and south wall and were represented only a single line of bricks. They perhaps represented the remains of benches. A small square hole was identified in this part of the shelter, possibly forming a second drain.
A concrete beam extended off of the south-eastern corner of the shelter. The purpose of this
was unclear with no evidence for a beam on the northern side of the shelter identified" (from the original report, 1).
The air raid shelter has been interpreted as a small communal shelter built on open land during the Second World War. Its demolition date is unknown, however, it was still extant during the late 1940s. (1)
