Full Description
A probable early-middle Bronze Age ring ditch was identified during an evaluation at Hartsdown Academy, Margate in 2018. The feature was identified to the south of the site running on a N-S alignment. The visible width of the feature was 1.80m, however its actual width is thought to be around 4-4.30m. The feature was recorded to a depth of 0.70-m. Two fills were identified, one of sandy silt/clay, one of sandy clay. Artefacts identified within the fills of the feature included five fragments of prehistoric worked flint, and 12 sherds of pottery from a probable Iron Age oviod jar.
The ditch has been interpreted as part of a Bronze Age ring ditch due to its location along the same alignment as a Bronze Age ring ditch cropmark feature to the south, suggesting that it is part of the same feature.
Later features identified at the site included an Iron Age hollow way, a pit, and a probable field system. (TR 36 NW 1379). (1)
