Full Description
A probable post-medieval quarry was identified during an evaluation at Abbey Place, Faversham in 2023. Several large cuts possibly relating to the quarry were observed at the site, the feature was thought to be over 1.4m in depth.
Finds associated with the quarry included ceramic building material (including brick and tile) and glass fragments from a post-medieval or modern bottle. Several (residual) sherds of late medieval Tyler Hill ware were also identified at the site, one recovered from the fill of the quarry, the other from the topsoil.
Whilst the feature has been interpreted a post-medieval as a result of the artefacts recovered from its fill, no quarry is depicted on OS maps of the area from the 19th century onwards, suggesting it could have an earlier date. (1)
