Full Description

Site of Metropolitan Infirmary, Northumberland Road(now Northdown Road), Margate as shown on thethe 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps and the Margate Town map 4.23. The building would appear to have been demolished as it is not shown on the current O/S map.(2-6)

The Metropolitan Infirmary was founded in 1841 to treat children suffering from conditions such as scrofula (a tubercular disease affecting the lymph glands of the neck), rickets and opthalmia. Sea-bathing and sea-water baths were prominent among the treatment provided. Children at the infirmary also received school lessons during their stay there. In 1900 the Infirmary premises were taken over by the West Ham union and continued to operate as a convalescent home for 150 patients. (1)
