Full Description
Two medieval kilns were identified at Darwin College, Canterbury in 1969-1970. The kilns were located 80ft from one another. “The first kiln had been substantially rebuilt on at least one occasion and had been constructed from a variety of clay bonded plain roof-tiles, both complete and fragmentary, as well as especially made kiln tiles. It measured some 4.6m in length by 3.8m in width, with its mouth facing north-east. Its side walls and two spine-walls supported three rows of twelve arches which supported the upper floor. The later clay-floor was archaeomagnetically dated to A.D. 1300 +/- 25 years…The second kiln, excavated in 1970, measured some 4.6m in length, 3.2m in width and faced south-west. Constructed of fragments [of] roof tiles bonded in clay, with a bakes clay floor. The evidence suggests that the kiln had been totally reconstructed four times following more or less the same plan. Roof-tile and pottery were seen in the kiln’s upper filling and an earlier large clay-quarry pit, some 6m in diameter, was recorded partially overlain by elements of the kiln structure” (from the original report, 1).
