Findspot record TR 36 NW 1381 - Colluvial layers containing finds associated with settlement

Summary

A a colluvial layer was recorded in two trenches during an archaeological evaluation associated with the installation of a water pipeline at Birchington. It contained occupational evidence in the form of pottery, daub fragments, fuel ash and worked flint. The pottery represented a range of dates, principally relating to the Late Bronze Age, with smaller quantities attributable to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman and medieval periods. Full Description

during an archaeological evalauation associated with the installation of a waterpipeline in Brichington a colluvial layer was recorded which contained occupational evidence in the form of pottery, daub fragments, fuel ash and worked flint. The pottery represented a range of dates, principally relating to the Late Bronze Age, with smaller quantities attributable to the Late Iron Age/Early Roman and medieval periods. The colluvium also contained an assembly of worked flint, which, where possible, was largely attributed to the Late Neolithic/Bronze Age periods. In consideration of the pottery evidence, a Bronze Age date for much of the worked flint articles is most likely. In addition, a single core rejuvenation flake may date to the Mesolithic/Early Neolithic periods and a probable late prehistoric spindle whorl was also recovered. The palaeoenvironmental samples from both trenches contained windblown settlement waste, which were not able to provide any further evidence for dating. This evidence, containing cereal fragments, seeds and charcoal fragments, is broadly suggestive of nearby settlement, agriculture and food-processing activity. The penannular cropmark to the west of Trench 6 is suggestive of the drip-gully of a prehistoric roundhouse, an interpretation which would be supported by the recovered artefactual and palaeoenvironmental evidence. The clusters of discrete cropmarks may illustrate associated activity, such as waste deposits/pits. Circular cropmarks possibly representing further roundhouse remains are illustrated to the south-west of Trench 6 and close to the west and slightly further east of Trench 1.
