Full Description
Inquest held in Dover on Tuesday before the Coroner (Mr S Payne) on the bodies of two men who were picked up from the wreck opposite the Lord Walden Hotel. The Captain of the ship Gustaff Adolf Marmerstrain, said that his vessel JOUTSEN belonged to ABO in Finland. She was a Barque, 655 tons burden. On Sunday night they were brought up to Dungeness but the wind blew so hard that they bore up and tried to make for the North sea. They could see the Dover and South Forland lights even though it was very thick. When near Dover the vessel drifted towards the shore but they tried to get her out to sea but could not beat against the force of the wind. Finding they could not get off, the anchor was dropped but the vessel dragged it and drifted ashore. The two bodies recovered were those of the mate and boatswain. When the witness saw that the vessel must be lost, he told the crew to save their own lives as best they could. When the vessel struck the ground she heeled over and there was water all around them. He believed the boastwain jumped into the sea before the vessel struck. The mate he thought went over the stern and witness saved himself by a rope over the side of the vessel, when he got close to the shore he got helped out of the water. The rest of the crew were assisted in a similar manner. The rocket apparatus did not arrive until nearly an hour and half after their call. 2 Crew lost, mate, boatswain Master: Gustaff Adolf Marmerstrais Crew Lost: 4 Owner: Abo Date of Loss: A
