Full Description
Chartered by a German company to carry emigrants to the United States, she sailed from Antwerp at noon on Tuesday, carrying some 200 people, mostly young, responsible German labourers, agricultural wives and families, including 50-60 women and 20-30 children. The weather was fine when she departed, but turned into a severe gale at SW in the Straits of Dover, causing the ship to bear up to the NW, making for the South Foreland. The mate advised the captain to check the course when she struck heavily on the Long Sands. Her false keel came up alongside the ship and the sea rushed in below drowning all the passengers. Some of the cargo was landed at Ramsgate and Margate. Wreckage washed ashore at Deal included a figurehead of Hercules, thought to be from this ship. There was also some bottles of wine.
