Full Description
The Ordnance Survey map, surveyed in1872 (published 1874) shows a Slip Way projecting into the Harbour, opposite the Hoy Inn on The Parade, Margate.
It is shown The Slipway had a capstan, used to hauling ships out of the water onto the slipway so that they could be repaired below the waterline.
There is very little evidence available as to the company who owned the Slipway and the type of work being carried out. However, the margatelocalhistory.co.uk website has several photographs of the Slipway over time (1860 – 1892) with Ships and Boats of various sizes hauled up onto the slipway.<1>
At some time between the photograph dated 1892 and the 2nd addition OS map, surveyed 1897 the Slip Way had been removed and replaced with a slipway onto the beach, probably used in launching small boats.
