Monument record TQ 87 NW 1193 - Earthwork traces of an extensive fragmented coaxial field system of uncertain date

Summary

The slight earthwork traces of an extensive fragmented coaxial field system of uncertain date seen in fields to the west and north-west of Allhallows village. These banks were detected as very slight banks on Environment Agency lidar imagery. Some appear to be former field boundaries in use at the time of earlier 19th and 20th century mapping. Others, however, appear to have been out of use for longer and can be seen to pre-date medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. Fragments of these earlier field boundaries can be seen extending across the ridge of high ground which extends south-west of Allhallows. These were mapped from lidar imagery as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Aerial photographs held by Kent County Council and taken in 1990 show the cropmark traces of several perpendicular linear ditches, two of which coincide with the courses of two of the linear banks identified on the lidar imagery, suggesting that they are part of the same system of field boundaries.
