Monument record MKE124779 - Air Raid Shelter, Cannon Road

A Second World War air raid shelter is visible as a structure on RAF HLA/380 921 15-DEC-1941. The feature is demolished on the latest Next Perspectives APGB Imagery TR3565 14-APR-2015. The feature was recorded as part of the Thanet Landscape Mapping project. (1-2)

Site of an entrance to the Second World War tunnels beneath Ramsgate located in an open space behind houses on Ellington Road and accessed from Cannon Road at TR 3785 6510 visible on aerial photographs taken in 1941. The entrance, one of a number which afforded access to the network of tunnels dug before the war as air raid shelters for the town took the form of an open stairway located in the north-eastern corner of the square. The tunnels still remain, but the entrances are now filled in or covered. This entrance was mapped as part of the Historic England: Ramsgate HAZ project. (3)
