Full Description

(TQ 61025751) A tile kiln was discovered in July 1940 during an excavation made for a private air-raid shelter at Borough Green, in the garden of a bungalow called Glenfield situated on the east side of the Borough Green - Wrotham road. The excavation disclosed two small,round-headed arches side by side about three feet below the surface. Material taken from the surrounding area included tiles, fragments of glazed brick, and blocks of ragstone and chalk. The stoke hole and oven floor were not exposed. The normal product of the kiln was a thin flat two-holed tile commonly applied in facing, and particularly in weather-tiling. It may well be that this kiln supplied material for the building of the neighbouring farmhouse of 16th century date. (1)
