Full Description

A linear bank, probably the remains of a medieval or post medieval causeway or counter wall seen at TQ 8428 7517 within the saltings adjacent to Colemouth Creek. It is aligned NE-SW and can be traced for c.142m. A continuation of this earthwork is to the south (separated by a narrow water channel) which can be traced for c.264m. It is likely to be part of the network of causeways which linked the islands within the saltings before they were severely denuded by clay digging in the 19th century for the cement production on Hoo. Subsequent erosion and by the sea had damaged the saltings further. This feature was was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1)
