Monument record TQ 87 NW 1234 - The earthworks of a 20th century log pond and log flume can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1952

Summary

The earthworks of a 20th century log pond and log flume can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1952. These were constructed after the closure of RNAS Kingsnorth (NMR 1458978) in 1921 when parts of the site, including the hangars were used for wood pulping. The pond was roughly rectangular measuring approximately 74m by 57m and was immediately to the west of the southern hangar. An earthwork bank was present on all but the western side. Towards the south western corner is the log flume, flanked by banks which could be traced for circa 580m to the south. The flume however does not reach the Medway and ends on the southern side of Damhead Creek. South of this area three slight depressions thought to indicate the unfinished continuation of the channel. This site closed before the Second World War and most of it has been built over although a circa 190m length of the log flume can still be seen on aerial photographs taken 2007, this is situated between the two power stations. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
