Monument record TQ 87 NW 1239 - The earthwork remains of a causeway linking Nor Marsh with the southern bank of the Medway
Summary
The earthwork remains of a causeway linking Nor Marsh with the southern bank of the Medway can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This causeway led from the coast at Grange across Cinque Port Marshes. It detours to provided access to a small area of fresh water marsh defended by a sea wall just off the coast before heading north east across Copperhouse Marshes towards Nor Marsh. A narrow water channel separates Nor Marsh from Copperhouse Marshes and traces of a hard across this channel can be seen. By the date of the 1867 Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map much of Cinque Port and Copperhouse Marshes had been removed (the mud was used in the manufacture of Portland cement). This appears to have interrupted the causeway in places and by the third edition (1909) neither a causeway nor trackway is marked. Some of this causeway can still be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
