Full Description
The remains of the post medieval sailing barge SWALE can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This barge is situated on Stoke Saltings at TQ 8304 7346. It is positioned alongside the wreck of a First World War U-boat and was originally recorded with this vessel, see NMR 900735. The fragmentary remains of the SWALE are still visible on an aerial photograph taken in 2007. This wreck was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-2)
Alphabetical list and gazetteer state history of vessel but do not give location. Shown in position corresponding to position as recorded above (1-2) on map of sailing barge remains 9.4.f, Kingsnorth Marsh, centred on OS TQ 818730 and published in 'Topsail' 15, Autumn 1976. (3)
Built 1864; registered at Rochester; register tonnage 37. Passed through various owners, hulked and derelict, remains recorded on map 1976 and visible 1986. Record does not show adjoining U-boat, but shows vessel with SOPHY ( (3)
Information as in alphabetical list and gazetteer as above. Recorded on sketch map, unnumbered but referenced as 9.2.c in gazetteer, at around TQ 829743. Alphabetical list and gazetteer, however, locate SWALE to around TQ 840740. (4)
