Full Description

During an archaeological evaluation carried out on land to the north of Canterbury Road West, a group of Mid-Late Medieval period quarries were identified across the site. most of these quarries cut colluvial deposits and were located in the central part of the site.

In trench 24 the quarry cut a colluvial deposit. measured 8m+ wide x 0.60m deep with steep inwards sloping sides and an undulating base and no clear alignment or shape. In trench 30 the quarry occupied most of the trench (18m+) and reached a maximal depth of 1.25m+ (slot [3017] was not bottomed) with moderate to steep inwards sloping sides and an undulating base visible in [3012], closer to the quarry’s edge. Analysis of the pottery assemblage dates [3003][3012][3017] to 1275-1375AD. [3003][3012][3017] caused a notable depression in the ground level of the field. In trench 33 the quarry was at the NNE end of the trench and measured approx. 5m long x 2.2m+ wide x 0.89m deep. It was ovate in plan with steep inwards sloping to near vertical sides and an undulating base, had no clear alignment, and possibly dated to after 1550AD. In trench 34 the edge of a quarry appeared at the N end of the trench and was visible in the trench section. It measured 1m+ long x 2m+ wide x 0.39m deep with a flat base and no visible sides in the trench, possibly dating to 1475-1525/1550AD. The quarry in trench 37, 1m from the W end of the trench was the edge of the quarry which occupied the next 13.5m of the trench, with a depth of 1.6m+, (not bottomed). It was a large ovate quarry cut with moderate to gentle inward sloping sides and no base or alignment visible. In trench 43 a quarry occupied the S 24m of the trench with a depth of 0.98m+. this was a very large irregular quarry feature with moderate inward sloping sides and no visible base in the trench. The quarry in trench 46 occupied the eastern 13m of the trench with depth of 1.17m+, with moderate inward sloping sides and no base or alignment visible within the trench, dating to 1375-1475AD. the quarry in trench 50 extended from the NW trench section SE for 10m, and was 0.71m deep. From the NNE end of trench 53, a quarry extended 4m to the SSW. It had a max depth of 0.54m and had a NNE-SSW alignment, with near vertical to gentle inwards sloping sides and an undulating base. The quarry in trench 54 was the only feature in this trench, it extends ~23.5m along the trench, was possibly aligned N-S, and had a max depth of 0.64m. In addition to these quarries a linear feature was identified in trench 47, this measured 0.40m wide x 0.30m deep and was aligned SE-NW, dating to 1375-1475AD. It was rectilinear and had moderate inwards sloping sides with a flat base. (information summarised from sources) (1-2)
