Full Description

A pipeline, pump house and storage building forming part of the RAF Manston FIDO system of Second World War date were seen as structures and cropmarks in RAF/106G/LA/90 RP 3014 04-JAN-1945, RAF/106G/UK/1131 RS 4006 17-JAN-1946 and, RAF/106G/UK/1131 RS 4005 17-JAN-1946.

The pump house and storage building were situated on the north side of the railway line at a siding called Abbey Farm, just over 2.4km south-west of the system's fuel tanks. Fuel was pumped along a 6 inch main to four fuel tanks at RAF Manston. The greater part of the position of this pipeline was visible as cropmarks. Small buildings in the position of the pump house and storage building are extant structures in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021 and may represent the original Second World War buildings. These features were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (1-5)
