Full Description
A firing range and magazines of 20th century date were visible as earthworks and structures in RAF/HLA/386 RP 664 02-JAN-1942 and RAF/HLA/564 V 6029 01-JUN-1942. They were located at the southern end of RAF Manston's 'War Flight' area on the east side of the airfield.
The site included a firing range and machine gun butt, flanked by partially revetted slit trenches. The firing range was drawn on a map of RAF Manston dated 7 April 1930 (RAF Museum, Hendon, reference MFC-78-24-0883), whilst the slit trenches are likely to date to the Second World War as is a small gun emplacement nearby. Two bunded buildings, respectively a magazine and a detonator store also of 20th century date, stood alongside. The whole complex was enclosed by lengths of barbed wire entanglement, the east side of which had already been removed by the time of the photography and was visible as a cropmark.
These features were recorded as levelled earthworks/demolished structures in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021. They were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (1-3)
