Full Description
Hard standings of 20th century date were visible as structures in RAF/HLA/407 V 85 28-FEB-1942. They were located at RAF Manston's 'War Flight' area on the east side of the airfield, constructed around 1917. A large rectangular hard standing had formed the base of a First World War hangar, while a smaller hard standing alongside formed an apron in front. A published ground photograph dating to about 1917 shows that the hangar had been an aeroplane twin shed with side access. A small storage building standing to the south side of the demolished hangar was extant at the time of this photography. These features were recorded as demolished structures in Next Perspectives APGB Imagery 07-APR-2021. They were mapped as part of the Historic England Isle of Thanet project in 2024. (1-3)
