Full Description

The buildings are not shown on the 1758 Sloane estate map, but at least one building can be seen clearly on the 1797 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing. In 1835, the then Lord Darnley who had almost completely chopped off two toes with an axe was briefly carried to the Cottage, lived in by a John Wells (the gamekeeper?). The tithe map shows one building on the site, but at some point in the latter half of the 19th century a second building is built behind the first, to the south and a clearing created to the southwest with a third building in it. There are also what look like animal pens or kennels on the path to the south. On the 4th edition map, the building to the southwest has gone, but all others remain.
