Full Description
The earthwork remains of a small part of a post medieval causeway on Stoke Saltings can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This circa 84m long earthwork is close to the sea wall (centred on TQ 8220 7420) and is all that remains of a circa1.6km long causeway depicted on the 1870 Ordnance Survey map. It originally connected with the track from Tudor Farm at the edge of the saltings at TQ 8211 7424. The first 60m long section was by 1896 isolated between the railway line and a new sea wall to the south and is no longer visible. The causeway headed south east to TQ 8283 7351 before heading north east ending at a probable livestock enclosure recorded in NMR 1538575. The Ordnance Survey map also depicts two paths leading from the causeway. One at TQ 8272 7360 was circa 137m long and led to a sheep fold (see NMR 1538676). The other was circa 295m long and left the causeway at TQ 8306 7357 ending on the saltings at TQ 8300 7332. By 1896 a significant area of the saltings had been removed (the mud was used in the manufacture of Portland cement). This cut the causeway in two removing a circa 45m section and included the loss of the shorter path and sheep fold it led to. Further mud extraction led to the removal of much of the remaining causeway. There are two surviving islands over which the causeway may have passed at TQ 8241 7397 and TQ 8256 7369 but not obvious remains can be seen. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-5)
