Monument record TQ 87 SW 1204 - A post medieval enclosure, probably a sheep fold can be seen on the 1870 Ordnance Survey map.
Summary
The earthworks of a post medieval causeway on Stoke Saltings can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2007. The causeway leaves the sea wall and after approximately 30m divides in two. The western arm continues for circa 30m at which point the saltings give way to mud. The eastern arm can be traced for circa 280m. The 1896 Ordnance Survey map only depicts a causeway for the first 30m and then from there only a trackway is shown. The eastern arm of the causeway matches the track depicted on the map while almost the entire route of the western arm has been destroyed by the removal of saltings (the mud was used in the manufacture of Portland cement). To the south east a small island of salting survives with a circa 30m length of causeway suggesting that, contrary to the map evidence, the entire length of this track was raised up. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-2)
