Monument record TQ 77 SW 1288 - The earthwork remains of a possible hollow way and associated embanked boundaries of uncertain date on Cooling Hill
Summary
The earthwork remains of a possible hollow way and associated embanked boundaries of uncertain date on Cooling Hill. The hollow way appeared to be flanked by a bank on the north-eastern side and could be seen extending SSE from the Buckland Road for 160m. At the northern end, adjacent to the road is a broad depressed area 32m x 12m recorded as a pond on the 1st -4th editon OS maps, but appears to be a continuation of the possible hollow way to the south, reused as a later pond. The hollow way turns east around Cooling Hill in the direction of Cliffe Woods, crossing over the parish boundary between Higham and Cliffe & Cliffe Woods. This section can be traced as a broad ditch or hollow way for 130m. A bank, possibly the contination of the flanking bank could be traced for a further 140m in the direction of Cliffe Woods. Two parallel curving banks, possibly lynchets, were also noted brancing off the NNW-SSE aligned section. These banks are both aligned NE-SW, lie c.40m apart and extend for c.110m along the contours of the hill. These features were mapped from a combination of aerial photographs and Environment Agency lidar imagery.
