Monument record TQ 77 SE 1434 - A large Second World War cylindrical storage tank can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946

Summary

A large Second World War cylindrical storage tank can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This tank, which measured circa 15.5m across, was situated in Tank Field within Ordnance Plantation. Air photos indicate that this tank was built after 1942 and was out of use by January 1947. Despite the association of this area with the supply of water (a pump house and water tanks are marked on the 1896 Ordnance Survey map and the name Tank Field is first used), this tank is not thought to be a water tank. It is possibly an admiralty fuel oil storage tank. The tank had been demolished by September 1947 but air photos taken in 1950 show that an area had been levelled to take the tank and this was in part defined by a ditch and outer bank. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
