Full Description
A probable Bronze Age ring ditch was identified during an excavation at Blean Church Field, Canterbury in 2020. The feature measured over 4.50m wide and over 0.72m deep. The fill of the ring ditch did not contain any dating evidence, however, fragment of copper alloy axe head dating to the Bronze Age was identified to the NW of the ring ditch (TR 16 SW 176). The proximity of this find suggested a possible link to the ring ditch.
The ring ditch is thought to have probably been associated with a burial mound at the site. A deposit of chalk containing significant quantities of charcoal associated with the central point of the ring ditch is considered to be a capping for the mound. Layers of flint to the NE of the ring ditch are thought to have formed part of the structure of the mound which was then covered with turf and/or sand. This barrow style is more common during the early Bronze Age, suggesting that this may be when the barrow originates from. (1)
