Full Description
An Iron Age enclosure formed of linear features was excavated at Blean Church Field, Canterbury in 2020. The linear features were identified during metal detecting previously carried out at the site. One of the linear features measured over 1.20m deep and over 4.00m wide, and contained pottery dating to 50 BC to 50 AD within its fill. Associated with the linear features were deposits of flint, thought to potentially have functioned as a boundary marker or wall.
13 fragments of coarseware pottery in total recovered from the fills of features at the site. "One fragment is 8.3cm tall and 4.9cm wide, and constitutes part of a vessel’s lip, neck and upper body" (from the original report, 1). Other finds recovered from the linear features include an undated mammal tooth, and undated oyster shell fragments, alongside burnt flint, and a fragment of worked flint in the shape of an arrowhead.
Another possible interpretation of the linear features identified to the east of the site is that they represent ditches associated with a medieval field system, however, as they are undated it is unclear whether they originate from the Iron Age or medieval period. (1)
