A group of possible Second World War allotments can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The majority of these allotments are situated behind houses on Chalk Road, which had been built by 1936, though at the eastern end the allotments extend up to the road. By 1954 this eastern extension had been built upon. A smaller group of allotments can also be seen in 1946 to the east in the angle formed where Chalk Road joins Rochester Road. These too had been built upon by 1954. It is possible that these allotments were created as part of the Dig for Victory campaign that was introduced in September 1940. This campaign encouraged people to produce their own food in response to the wartime shortages. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
