Full Description
At 7am. on the day she was lost, the 2nd. officer took bearings on the Corton Lightship, and at 10.50am. the 1st. officer took bearing of the Shipwash Lightship., but it was later found that both bearings were incorrect. Capt. Andrews also mistook the Longsand Lightship for the Galloper, and as a consequence the vessel was very much off course. At 2.45pm. in hazy weather, she ran on the Long Sand off Ramsgate. Her engine was put astern but at that moment the safety valve on the boiler broke and the 2nd. engineer was badly scalded, the steam pressure fell away, and it became impossible to keep the bilge pumps working. The sea being rough the starboard lifeboat and gig were smashed as soon as they were swung out, the crew being forced to take refuge in the foremast rigging, the bridge and charthouse. Six men on the forecastle were washed off and drowned, leaving only the port lifeboat, which was damaged. This was repaired and eventurlly 14 of the crew reached the Kentish Knock Lightship nine miles from the wreck. The Captain died from his injuries in the lifeboat.
