Full Description
Dew pond (or sole pond), visible on 1st edition map only. Recorded during 2024 Kent Downs National Landscape Historic Ponds project.
Preservation:Pond on historic maps but not visible on current OS (ghost pond)
Pond shape:Circular/oval
Site type: Dew pond (or sole pond)
Description: A small oval shaped pond to the east of Bore Place in the deer park. Close to a junction of field boundaries. Only seen on the 1st edition OS then disappears. Very faint on 1m LiDAR.
Recorded date: 08/07/2024 (1)
A borehole survey was carried out at the pond in 2025. Two boreholes were sunk, one of which identified a sequence of weathered London Clay overlain by topsoil, suggesting that it was not in the correct location for the pond. The other borehole was sunk in a more likely location for the pond, however, this borehole had to be abandoned due to the presence of roots and stones.
The pond is thought (2) to potentially date from 1761 AD or earlier. (2)
