Full Description
[TQ 65985135] Little Moat Cottage (T.1.] (1) Little Moat Cottage, now derelict, is a 19c. farmhouse. To the NW of the house is a rectangular-shaped pond while to the NE can be traced a depression 8.0m wide and 0.5m deep. These features, together with the name of the house strongly suggest that a moat formerly existed here. An Antiquity Model survey has been prepared. (2) This depression, which has the appearance of a hollow-way, is shown as a track on the Tithe Map of 1842. (3) TQ 65 SE EAST PECKHAM SEVEN MILE LANE (off) 2/62A Little Moat Cottage II House, now barn. Mid C14, with late C18 facade. Timber framed with brick front, rendered at time of resurvey. Weather-boarded left gable end and plain tile roof; roof hipped both ends; central brick ridge stack. Two window openings and one central door opening to each floor. Narrow rear lean-to. Interior: open hall of 2-bay timber framed construction; rear half of central smoke-blackened base cruck truss survives; considerable remains of C14 timber framing including dragon tie in one corner and rear aisle. (4) Little Moat Cottage. Not listed as a moated site in the County checklist for Kent - December 1979. (5)
