Full Description
[TQ 66165216] St. Michael's Church [NAT] (1) The church at East Peckham is dedicated to St. Michael. Domesday mentions a church at Peckham. It is more than probable that the church was rebuilt in the late 12th c. It comprised a nave, chancel and possible a small south aisle. At the end of the 13th c. the nave was lengthened by two more arcades and early in the 14th c. the tower was built. The east wall of the chancel was rebuilt and a chancel aisle added in the late 14th c. A porch was built in the 15th c. and other alterations have been made. The church was an early possession of Christchurch, Canterbury. There is a list of rectors from the early 15th c. (2) Similar information - re-dedication. (3) Brief references to the church - "heavy war damage", restored. (4) St. Michael's, East Peckham. Chiefly Perpendicular but the north arcade of the nave is 14th c. There are a few fragments of old painted glass". (5) The church is at the present time in use for divine worship. The nave and tower walls and buttresses have been cement-coated. (Viz. Authy. 4) (6) Checked and correct: in normal use. (7) Parish church of St. Michael. Grade II*. Mostly C14, heavily restored in C19. This church is now in the care of the Redundant Church Commission. Stable to the south of St. Michael's Church. Grade II*. Built as stabling for horses belonging to church congregation. [For full description see list]. (8)
