Full Description
Three N-S aligned medieval linear features were excavated during an evaluation at Blacksole Farm, Herne Bay in 2023. One of the features measured 4.7m+ long by 1.05m wide and between 0.21m and 0.25m deep. The feature was dated to the 1300-1375 AD through pottery recovered from the fill of the feature. Another feature measured 0.72m+ long by 0.32m+ wide and 0.16m deep, and was dated to the 13th century. The other linear feature measured 1.8m+ long by 0.68m wide and 0.22m deep, and contained pottery dating between 1175-1250 AD.
8 sherds of medieval pottery were recovered overall, comprising 1 sherd of Canterbury Tyler Hill sandy ware (1300-1375AD), 5 sherds of East Kent shell tempered ware (1075-1225AD), and 2 sherds of East Kent sandy ware (1150/1175-1225AD). Some of these artefacts are considered to potentially be residual in nature due to their abraded appearance.
The linear features were thought to be agricultural in origin. (1)
