Full Description
During a stip map and sample excavation associated with the installation of a foul water drain, part of a wider scheme of archaeological excavation at westwood cross, to the south east extent of the strip a large post medieval pit feature was observed, this had diameter in excess of 20m and is categorised as a chalk quarry pit. Located approximately 20m to the north west of this feature a smaller sub-oval vertical sided pit measuring approximately 3m x 6m was partially excavated and is also categorised as a quarry pit. The chalk quarrying on the site may relate to ‘marling’ of the fields during the medieval and post medieval periods. (information summarised from source) (1)
