A post-medieval chalk pit is visible on Heritage Tithe Map, and 1st and 2nd edition OS maps the near Bilting Farm. The pit is described as "Old Chalk Pit" on the 2nd edition OS map, suggesting that it had gone out of use prior to the 20th century. (1, 2)
