Full Description
Possible Round Barrow, in woodland and covered with trees and brambles. It is on a gentle east facing slope, just off the summit of a chalkland ridge aligned SW by NE.
Description: Low, weathered mound recorded as being between 30 and 35m in diameter, slightly damaged along its north-eastern edge by modern off-road bikers track (banks and hollows). When viewed from the downhill (SE) side the mound appears about 1m high (Fig. 3); when viewed from the uphill (NW) side it appears about 0.40m high. No enclosing ditch visible.
Many old animal burrows (20+) have been dug into all parts of the mound. Some of these are over 1m deep. None appear to be currently active. Spoil from the burrows indicates that the mound is formed from silty brown clay with no chalk present. Two unworked struck flints and two calcined flint fragments were noted amongst spoil on the western side – not collected.
Fairly certainly, the mound has never been ploughed. There seems little doubt that it represents a prehistoric round barrow, although excavation would be needed to confirm this. <1>
